Email Rules of Do’s 👍🏽 and Don’ts 👎🏽

  • Type the email message FIRST.
    • BEFORE adding any email address to prevent sending it too early by mistake.
  • Use a clear, direct subject line.
    • Examples are “Job Application” or “My New Job!” or “Upcoming Interview”.
  • Only use a professional email address.
    • Never use personal email addresses such as “babylove@…” or “bigdaddy@…”.
    • >>> Get a new FREE Gmail address with your name | your.name@gmail.com.
  • Use professional greetings and closings.
    • Do not use laid-back, phrases like, “Hey guys,” “Yo,” or “Hi folks.”
    • Use “Hello or Good Morning” to begin and “Thank you,” or “Sincerely,” to end.
  • Rarely use exclamation points, if ever!
    • If used, never use more than one!!!
  • Never use smileys or causal emoticons. ;-(
  • Be cautious with humor in email.
    • Save it for the right time in the interview – only if appropriate.
    • People from different cultures speak and write differently.
    • Miscommunication can occur because of cultural differences.
  • Proofread every message or have it read by someone else first.
    • Do not rely on spell-checkers.
    • Read and re-read your email a few times, preferably aloud, before sending it off.
  • Double-check that you have selected the correct recipient.
    • Think twice before hitting “Reply all.”
